Why Is My Vape Spitting?

If your vape is spitting hot drops of e-liquid into your mouth, you’re probably dealing with what vapers call vape spitback. It usually happens when there’s more e-liquid around the coil than the device can vaporize properly.

You may hear a loud popping or crackling sound, notice a wet mouthpiece, or feel tiny drops of hot e-liquid on your tongue. It can be annoying, but in many cases, the cause is fairly simple to identify.

Here’s what can make a vape spit and what you can do about it.

What Does Vape Spitback Mean?

Vape spitback happens when excess e-liquid sits on or around the heating coil. When the coil heats up, the liquid rapidly boils and can send small droplets through the mouthpiece instead of turning cleanly into vapor.

A little crackling is normal. The problem is when you hear loud popping and get hot liquid in your mouth.

Spitback is also different from vape leaking into your mouth. Leaking usually means e-liquid is escaping from the device, while spitback happens during the heating process.

1. Your Coil Is Flooded

A flooded coil is probably the most common reason for vape spitting.

When too much e-liquid enters the coil chamber, the coil can't vaporize it all at once. The excess liquid sits around the heating element and pops when you take a puff.

This can happen after filling a tank, using too much e-liquid when priming a new coil, or leaving a device unused for a while.

If your vape is also making a wet, bubbling or gurgling sound, a flooded coil is a strong possibility.

2. You Over-Primed a New Coil

Priming helps prevent dry hits, but more isn't always better.

If you soak a new coil with too much e-liquid, the wick can become saturated before the device has a chance to vaporize the excess. The result can be a flooded coil and vape spitting juice through the mouthpiece.

When installing a new coil, follow the manufacturer's instructions rather than adding a large amount of e-liquid directly into the coil.

It's also a good idea to give a freshly installed coil a little time to absorb the e-liquid evenly before taking a full puff.

3. You Filled the Tank or Pod Too Much

Overfilling can create similar problems.

When there isn't enough air space left in a refillable tank or pod, pressure can push e-liquid toward the coil and airflow path. That extra liquid can eventually lead to gurgling, leaking or spitback.

If you use a refillable device, avoid filling beyond the recommended level and follow the filling instructions for your specific model.

4. You're Pulling Too Hard

Your draw can make a difference, too.

A very hard or sharp inhale can pull more e-liquid toward the coil than it can vaporize. This is particularly noticeable on smaller pod devices and tighter airflow setups.

Try a slower, gentler draw instead of taking a strong pull.

If the problem improves when you change your draw, your vaping style may have been contributing to the vape spitback.

5. Your Wattage Is Too Low

This mainly applies to devices with adjustable power.

If your wattage is set too low for the coil, the coil may not produce enough heat to vaporize the e-liquid efficiently. Some of the liquid can remain around the coil and eventually pop through the mouthpiece.

Check the wattage range printed on the coil or provided by the manufacturer. If your device allows adjustments, stay within the recommended range rather than simply turning the power up as high as possible.

For devices without adjustable wattage, this isn't something you can manually change.

6. Your E-Liquid May Be Too Thin for the Device

E-liquid viscosity can also play a role.

Liquids with a higher PG content are generally thinner than high-VG liquids. If a very thin e-liquid is used in a device designed for thicker liquid, it may reach the coil faster than expected and contribute to flooding.

This is more relevant to refillable tanks and pod systems where you can choose your e-liquid.

Always use the type of e-liquid recommended for your device rather than assuming every PG/VG ratio will work equally well.

7. There's Condensation in the Mouthpiece

Sometimes what looks like vape spitting liquid is actually condensation.

Vapor cools as it travels through the mouthpiece and can leave small amounts of moisture inside the airflow path. If enough builds up, it can mix with e-liquid and produce a wet or popping draw.

Remove the mouthpiece if your device allows it and wipe away visible moisture with a clean, dry tissue.

If liquid continues to build up quickly, however, don't assume it's just condensation. There may be an underlying flooding or leaking issue.

8. The Coil or Pod Is Worn Out

A coil doesn't last forever.

As the wick and heating element age, the way they handle e-liquid can change. A worn coil may start producing inconsistent vapor, gurgling or vape popping and spitting.

If you've already checked your filling, airflow and power settings and the problem keeps coming back, replacing the coil or pod may be the simplest solution.

For a sealed disposable vape, you generally shouldn't try to open or repair the internal components yourself.

How to Stop Your Vape From Spitting

If you're getting hot droplets during a puff, start with the simplest checks:

  • Wipe out any visible e-liquid or condensation from the mouthpiece.

  • Check whether the coil or pod is flooded.

  • Avoid overfilling a refillable tank or pod.

  • Take slower, gentler draws.

  • Check the recommended wattage if your device has adjustable power.

  • Make sure your e-liquid is suitable for the device.

  • Replace an old or damaged coil or pod.

If your device has started leaking vape juice as well as spitting, inspect it for damaged seals, cracks or other visible problems.

Why Is My Vape Popping and Spitting?

A soft crackle while vaping is usually normal. The heating coil is rapidly turning e-liquid into vapor, which can create some noise.

Loud popping accompanied by hot droplets is different. It usually indicates that excess e-liquid is sitting on the coil.

So if you're hearing a loud pop and getting liquid in your mouth, think about flooding first. Check the coil, filling level, airflow and draw style before assuming the device itself is defective.

When Should You Replace Your Vape or Coil?

Occasional spitback doesn't necessarily mean you need a new device.

If the problem appears after filling or replacing a coil, correcting the excess e-liquid may solve it. However, persistent spitback combined with leaking, a damaged pod, cracked tank, unusual heat or other signs of malfunction is a different situation.

For a rechargeable device, follow the manufacturer's instructions for replacing the affected component. If a device appears damaged or unusually hot, stop using it rather than attempting to repair it yourself.

Final Thoughts

So, why is your vape spitting?

In most cases, the problem comes down to excess e-liquid reaching the coil faster than it can be vaporized. A flooded coil, over-priming, overfilling, hard draws, incorrect wattage, condensation and an unsuitable e-liquid can all contribute to vape spitback.

Start with the basics: check for excess liquid, clean the mouthpiece, adjust your draw and make sure your coil or pod is being used as intended.

If the spitting continues after these checks, replacing a worn coil or pod may be the next step. And if the device itself is damaged or behaving unusually, it's safer to stop using it and follow the manufacturer's guidance.
